East River Park
The Ecology Center has worked with community residents encouraging stewardship activities in East River Park since 1998. Each year community volunteers contribute countless hours of their time to the upkeep of the park, tending to garden beds and enhancing the park by planting native plants and bulbs.
In the spring of 2006 the Ecology Center started to meet with Lower East Side community members to collect ideas about how three sites in East River Park could be best utilized to meet community needs. We have presented a report of what we heard in these meetings to Parks. Out of this process, a community group, now called Community Hooked on East River Park (CHERP) has formed. CHERP is a group of volunteer advocates engaged in fostering awareness and participation in East River Park, with the goal to promote a safe, clean, beautiful green waterfront park for everyone to enjoy.
