Part-Time Field Assistant Position

Bilingual (Mandarin/Cantonese) Part-time Field Assistant, NYC Compost Project hosted by the Lower East Side Ecology Center

Program Information:

The NYC Compost Project hosted by the Lower East Side Ecology Center seeks an enthusiastic individual with compost and outreach experience for a part-time Field Assistant. 

The NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation’s Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability in 1993, works to rebuild NYC’s soils by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to make and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs are implemented by DSNY-funded teams at seven host organizations, including the Lower East Side Ecology Center. 

The Lower East Side Ecology Center offers free public compost collection and education, electronic waste recycling, stewardship of public open space, and environmental education. Our programs focus on offering opportunities for all New Yorkers to learn about environmental issues facing NYC and to take responsibility for solving those problems. 

Position:

In 2012, the New York City Compost Project expanded its program to provide NYC residents with a wider range of food scrap drop-off opportunities. The NYC Compost Project hosted by the Lower East Side Ecology Center manages 4 Commuter Compost drop-off sites and processes that material at its composting facility. This position would be to staff one of these food waste drop off sites, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:30am to 11:30am while conducting outreach to residents who primarily speak Mandarin and Cantonese. 

Responsibilities:

•Act as an ambassador of the NYC Compost Project.

•Conduct community outreach at food scrap drop-offs Commuter Composting locations, especially to Chinese speaking residents of the Lower East Side and Chinatown 

•Assist in volunteer management at compost workdays and events, as needed.

•Additional duties as determined by NYC Compost Project Program Manager.

Qualifications:

•Outgoing personality and a passion for urban agriculture, composting, and community-based outreach.

•Fluency in Mandarin and/or Cantonese.

•Driver’s license a plus.

•Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and provide regular feedback to program manager.

•Must be able to work Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays or other days as assigned from 7:30AM until 11:30AM.

•Ability to lift up to 40 lbs alone or a shared load of up to 70lbs; and to generally handle physically strenuous tasks in all weather conditions.

•Commitment to and working knowledge of composting practices for urban settings

•Basic understanding of NYC government and DSNY’s Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability.

Hours and Compensation:

This is an hourly position for 12 hours per week, $20.00 per hour.
