Greening
The public greening program focuses on open space preservation and maintenance, wildlife habitat creation, and urban gardening at the Lower East Side Ecology Center Garden and East River Park.
Greening Parks
The Ecology Center holds cleanup and gardening volunteer days in partnership with various local organizations, corporations and institutions to bring people into hands-on contact with the natural environment. During these stewardship events, participants might weed, plant native plants and bulbs, apply compost and woodchips to garden beds and take part in other restorative measures. Please check the calendar for upcoming gardening days in East River Park.
Street Tree Care
The Lower East Side Ecology Center, in collaboration with Trees NY and MilllionTrees NYC, will show you how any New Yorker can care for their local street trees. In these workshops you will learn about the benefits of having trees in your neighborhood, how they reduce air pollution, beautify, and increase business! You will also learn how to plant native species in tree pits for water retention and beautification, aerate a tree pit, apply compost, and order free street trees for your block. All participants in the Street Tree Care workshops can receive a free street tree care kit if they adopt a tree or a block in their neighborhood. Please check the calendar for upcoming street tree workshops.
